THE COLDEST CONTINENT
The coldest, windiest, and driest continent on earth
is Antarctica.
The lowest temperature -89.3 degrees Celsius (-128.6
degrees Fahrenheit). At the South Pole varies from – 31 degrees Fahrenheit in
the midsummer -70 in the midwinter.
Antarctica has the smallest population of any
continent; the population of Antarctica grows from about 1,000 in winter to
about 4.000 during the summer.
In 1899, explorer set up a research bases, and people
could live there. Now there are about 60 research bases.
Antarctica is the driest place on earth, because
Antarctica winds are strongest on the planet, reaching
up to 320 kilometers (199) miles per hour.
Antarctica has a very special feature: the "ice flowers". These are formed on layers
sea ice from water vapors that escape from the cracks and holes in the ice surface.
